I have curly hair that's really thick, and it's actually more "Fluff" than "Curl"

I want to be able to wear it down without looking like Hermione Granger in her firt year. Here's a picture of what my hair rowt of looks like, so you can see the dammage.

hahaha, damn right girl, that's not CURL.... go to the nearest salon or something, have a rebond, or ask a hair expert, yes, a hair expert is just what you need in this kind of situation. hahaha

I had a similar problem to you- until I found this website: http://www.naturallycurly.com/ It saved my hair. After reading a ton of the tutorials, asking questions in the newbie-friendly forums, and getting daily e-mail updates and tips, my hair is smooth, manageable, and more curly (in a good way). Good luck! I feel your pain!
