Hi i have put other questions on about toning down highlights and someone said to buy toners. I had a look in boots (uk) but all they had was wash in dyes in small sachets. However i am unsure about putting brown toner over hightlights ???
Can anyone explain what type of toner i need?
many thanks

A toner is for unwanted tones on level 8 and above hair color. Level 8 is a blond. IF you have unwanted tones in darker hair just go to a semi-perm color. Permanent color will not stay any longer and you will have to contend with it later. If the pieces you want darker are very pale you will have to add a little pigment and warmth into them. The rule would be to add to those pieces only a color 2 levels lighter and warmer and then color over with the desired shade. If you want med golden brown: you "fill" with dk blond, strawberry blond- then color over with the golden brown. IF the task is a small project you can most likely handle it. If it is a big job, an entire head or big section- head to a salon.

I would use a purple based shampoo or one for white hair, sounds wierd i know but IT WORKS. Also if you look in superdrug they do little bottles of toner at around 99p (small grey bottles) they do a variety of colours but i find the ash one is the nicest. It wont make your highlights grey or ash just takes out the yellow brassy tones. You will find thse bottles with the hair colours. Nice and easy do a toner as well they are around £2.99 and the beige blonde is really nice. Good luck

i have been a stylist for 15 years and you don't want to put brown toner on your highlights unless you want to turn them brown. any color you put on your highlights will grab the base color. so watch out if you are having a brassy problem you will need to wash with a purple shampoo called shimmering lights that will take the brassy ness away if thats your problem
if they are to bright than a tomer would be good but get a color that has a blonde or yellow base.
