So i had dyed black hair and i wanted to dye it red..almost like a vibrant Merlot. After watching a crappy youtube video, i decided to buy L'Oreal's Hicolor excellence in magenta. That stuff is specifically for dark hair without any type or prelightening.. Along with that, i bought a 20 vol developer. (bad choice) soo long story short: my hair is still dark. It's red on the roots though. The dye did lighten up my hair...my hair is actually now dark brown...but in it's still dark! So im still trying to get red hair...and i know developers help lighten/darken hair. I'm pretty much going to use the same method but with a stronger developer. Should I use 30 developer or 40?

Black hair dye is like black clothes dye. You will not lift the colour just with an ordinary tint and peroxide. You need to remove some of the black tint before you can colour over it. That is why your natural hair accepted the tint and the tinted hair did not.

Increasing the volume or strength of the peroxide will not make any difference to the result of the process.

30, its less damage to your hair
