I have quite dark brown hair. It's fairly strongly highlighted (naturally) and I think the underlying pigment is orange(ish).
Iv'e used temporary hair colours withoout pre-lightening and obviously they don't come out very well, blue looks grey :s.
I have decided to pre-lighten my hair this time and use demi or semi-permanent hair colour (still very bright colours though). I dind't really want to take all the colour out though :(

Basically I'm still a bit confused about the underlying pigment thing. Probablly just feeling tired lol! But am I right in thinking that blues wont work very well because my underlying pigment is orange, so they cancel each other out?
Also, what I was hoping to do was kinda blend from a red) into a purple, bright colours. Will this work well?

Feel free to tell me if you've got any good ideas :D

that underlying pigment thing is aload of crap. i have the same pigment as you and i've been pink, purple, blue, red, green etc.. never been a problem here, as long as you lighten it as much as possible

well, i would leave it, but raquel reed bleaches her hair platinum blond first, then dyes it. It lasts awhile if you use professional stuff. and yes, orange always cancels out blue.
