My mom has very long hair down almost to her knee. Her hair is brown, thick ,healthy,no split end,no layer. She make her hair into a
huge bun with a hairnet every day.

Yesterday in the shopping mall,my mom's bun was a little loose. And she went to the Ladies' room and release her hair ,brushed it ,in order to make a tidy bun again.A young lady saw her hair and told my mom she should cut her hair short and donate it to locks of love, bun with hairnet is a style for old granny. My mom said "no,i love my hair."the lady said my mom was selfish that made my mom unhappy the whole day.

My mom is 46 years old.If she cut her hair, she would have no chance to grow her hair that long in her whole life. She wants to keep it long when it turn to grey.So i want to ask ,should i mom cut her hair and donate it.Is it selfish if don't donate hair to locks of love?

It is not selfish to not donate.

Hair is a very identifying thing for people. She has worked hard to get her hair to that length and have it be something that people use to identify her and her personality.

Don't let your mom worry about that lady, that was a very rude thing to do.

If your mom ever does decide to cut her hair... then she should donate it. ONLY then would it be selfish not to donate it. She has to decide to cut it for her own reasons, not just because someone told her to donate it.

Cutting off a lot of hair has a kind of psychological effect, it is like a new beginning or a change in your life. You should only do it if you are ready to.

No, it's not selfish. If she were to cut it because she wanted to, and then she didn't donate and just let the stylist throw it away, THAT would be selfish. But no etiquette or law states that you MUST grow out your hair and cut it off to donate. That lady that told her that was a b*tch.

You don't go making charitable decisions for other people.

Locks of Love needs 10-12 inches of hair, if your mom decides to do it, she need not be scalped, in fact, considering the way she wears it, no one would notice, not even her.

But, when people do something that extreme, a good part of their identity is wrapped up in it, it is after all a very difficult thing to care for, considerable time is spent washing and drying, rolling and pinning, much more than would be considered acceptable unless its tied into her idea of herself.

if she has no need for the hair, then perhaps it is selfish...HOWEVER, a woman's hair is her sanity....many cut their hair to "start over", gain new insight, etc. Now, ask your mom how she would feel if she did donate her hair. A child/teenager has cancer and no hair, someone who isnt able to grow their hair, how would she feel if she did it? Yes she will miss it, but then there is the constant reminder that she has blessed someone else who doesn't have the opportunity to do what she already has. Sometimes its better to be a blessing....See what she thinks about it.

Your mother is not selfish. That lady was simply rude, and she has no right to tell your mother what to do. That hair is part of her own body and even though it's not like her hair is a kidney or something like that -- nobody has a right to tell her to cut part of her own body off and give it to someone else.

No that's not selfish!

Whoever told her that, is NOT a good spokesperson for Locks of Love and makes them look bad...

Whenever you donate something, you do it out of charity, because you want to... and if she doesn't want to, she doesn't have to.

(I know its YOUR mom, but that even made ME mad!)

Tell you mom not to feel bad...

No, she is not selfish at all for wanting to keep her hair! It's her hair, and she can do what she wants with it. :]

No, it's not selfish if she wants to KEEP it. If she got it all docked off and just trashed it.... ehhh.
