I've got hair that falls just above my shoulder's, around my collar bone and it's fairly layered but not loads of short ones at the top. I want to achieve a messy bun style, like a 'just woke up and threw my hair in a bun' look. On a morning my hair is stuck up and not even the nice messy so i cant leave it like that. Any help?

Just put in a quick pony, with a comb but it doesn't have to be completely flat, you can have bumps and tangles sticking up in your hair and before you pull your hair straight throught the elastic band, leave it there and just use your fingers to ruffle it a bit.

Hope i helped, i'm not very good at explaining.. :)

Comb your hair well to get rid of any tangles. Pull your hair backwards, gathering it into a loose ponytail. If you want to create a lower messy bun, you can start the ponytail at the nape of your neck. But if you want your bun higher, make a high ponytail.Tie your ponytail with an elastic band and smooth out the bumps with a brush and gently pull up the pony, to create fullness on the top of your head. You can add some hairspray in order to make your hair easier to work with.

Wrap your hair around the base of your ponytail until it starts to coil around on itself and forms a loose bun on top of your head. You can either fix your messy bum with bobby pins or with a second elastic band.

.

Using pins: Pin the edges of the bun. The pin should go in the roll and the hair underneath. Slide the pins into the roll and catch the hair with the longer tip. Rotate the pin and insert it to fix the bun. Drag the tips of the pin to touch your scalp. Be careful, not to hurt your scalp! You can divide your hair into two or three sections, twist and pin each section, one after another.

Another option is to use a second elastic band to secure the hair that was twisted and wrapped around the base of the ponytail. Tuck some bobby pins into the sides of the bun, to bring it closer to your head and to secure it.

As a final step, pull out loose, thin strands of hair around your neck, using your fingers. This way you bun will look semi effortless.

if that's a bit confusing because i know it may be, try this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIuqRzxD0sg, i found it helpful, or you can work with this idea as a base and do your own thing

oh my gosh, i asked this question like 2 days in the past!!! it is what i found out : scrunch some mousse via your moist hair. blow it dry, do no longer BRUSH!! while your hair is dry, turn your head the different way up and carry at the same time your hair right into a intense ponytail. loosely twist the ponytail, and wrap it around itself so curiously like a bun. use hairpins and a hair tie to hold it in place. take small sections of hair out of the bun and twist them the different way. take a pencil and slide it in the time of the bun, to make greater specific it won't come out. take your arms or a comb and rake it around the bun to make it seem much greater messy. ta da, your finished!! I even have great thick and long hair, and this consistently works for me!! TIP- you may substitute hairspray for mousse. and if all else fails, try curling your hair formerly twisting it up right into a bun.
