Hair styles for really long hair?

I have really long hair, with medium thickness. The last time I measured it was 3 feet, 6 inches long. Now, I'm only 4'11" tall, so it's almost down to my knees. Anyways, I'm thinking of getting it cut to my lower back, maybe (which would still cut off a good 8 inches or so). I'm not positive if I'll do this soon, but it's becoming difficult to manage. Honestly, I've never had a hair cut in my life except my bangs when I was like in 3rd grade. Now those are completely grown out as well.

Anyways, if I get it cut to my lower back, what kind of cut could I get? And also (if I don't get it get soon, and possibly if I do), what kind of hairstyles can I do? Normally I just leave it down, braid it, or put it in a pony tail. I love my long hair, but this is getting too long for me, so I'd like it at lower back length.

Here's JJJ's long hair links page, which has lots of links to long hair sites, including forums where you can discuss the best way to go. I am sure they would be delighted to welcome you, as I am delighted to hear of your wonderful long hair.

They often discuss the dilemma between allowing to grow to floor length, or cutting it to lower back where it can be worn down more often, is easier to brush, and does not get caught up in things. It's balancing practicality with living a dream, and much depends on your own private outlook on life.

There are also various styles and updos you can play with, non-destructive ones. With hair your length, you have the full gamut of fairy tale fantasies to try out, and all of them real!

One thing you should avoid. Long hair frames the body, not the face. Therefore you should always consider how it falls around your body, your breasts, your hips and the touch of it on your back and over your arms. Only short-haired people (and most hairdressers are aiming for short hair, because that is all they can understand) concentrate on the face only.

With your hair, I think I would go further, and think of it in the context of a beautiful wood in harmony with the branches and the twigs and the sort of nature it takes a lifetime to bring about. I think in particular of the weeping willow in early summer in the way the leaf-covered branchlets brush over your arms as you crawl to shelter inside.

You should definetly CUTT your hair. My hair is 3/4 down my back and I'm overdue for a haircut. Also if you've never cut your hair, how many split ends do you have? There are several great hairstyles out there. You should donate that hair to the Locks of Love. I suggest you go to a nice salon and have the stylist help you. If you have it cut to you're lower back and don't like how they cut it, you'll still have plenty more hair to chop off. There's really not much you can do if your hair is too long. It gets weighed down and....Well good luck.

I agree with ManySaySo!!!

You must get lots of compliments!! If it gets hard to manage, maybe try braiding it more often. Hope you decide to keep it! Knee length hair is very rare these days!
