Hairspray comes in three holds; soft, flexible and strong.

Soft hairspray just provides a soft hold, and you can still work out the style you're trying to with a soft hairspray. It also gives your hair a more natural "I didn't use anything in my hair at all" appearance.

Flexible hairspray will provide a medium hold. It is also called a working spray, because you can style your hair and spray it in and give yourself a style all at the same time. It gives your hair a slight appearance of using something in it.

Strong hairspray has a strong hold, and pretty much freezes your hair in place. It can also be called a freezing spray, or a finishing spray. It's not very easy to style your hair after you have used the stronger hairspray.

There are two different types of hairspray: Aerosol and Non-Aerosol.

I'm only familiar with the salon quality hairspray so here's two examples (one of each type).

AEROSOL: This would be something like Redken Forceful (strongest hold from this line). It comes in a can and you can just hold the nozzle and spray without stopping until the hold is achieved.

NON-AEROSOL: This would be something like Paul Mitchell Soft Spray (softest hold from this line). With a non-aerosol hairspray (it comes in a plastic bottle), you have to continuously pump the nozzle until the hold or look is achieved, and only one spray comes out at a time. These are easier to clog, but they are better for the environment.

Hairspray can also make your hair sticky if you use too much.

As for gel, if you go into a salon you can find a dozen or more types of gels out there.

There are different holds, and different types.

Take the line Tigi for example. Tigi has a spray gel, a mohawk gel, and a regular just squirt it out of the tube and put it in your head gel.

The most popular gel that I personally sell in my salon is by KMS California. It's in a white bottle or tube with a pink cap, and it's called HairPlay.

It has a very strong hold and is very popular with both men and women alike.

If you are male, I'd suggest getting the American Crew gel. It's the most popular for the men. For the women, the most popular is Redken Hard Up gel.

You can get any of these gels at almost any salon near you.

Good luck and I hope I helped!

Hair spray (also hair lacquer, spritz, or sticky water) is a common household aqueous solution that is used to keep hair stiff or in a certain style. Weaker than hair gel, hair wax, or glue, it is sprayed to hold styles for a long period. Using a pump or aerosol spray nozzle, it sprays evenly over the hair. May leave hair feeling "crunchy" unless brushed out.

You can buy hair gel at most drugstores.

Hairspray keeps hair in that position you need, :D Then hair looks better when you use it, it's used when you have done hairdo.

Hmm, Maybe this:
