I have heard and read that it is better for some hair types, namely people with thick and/or dry hair, to just wash their hair every second or third day. I'm wondering, what are you supposed to do on the days you don't wash your hair? I use products on my hair in the morning and throughout my day, including hairspray, and I don't feel that it is very clean when it gets to be nighttime. I have thick, coarse, and sometimes oily hair.
Should I wash it every other day and rinse but not wash on the others?

The reason they say it's better to only wash your hair every couple of days (I'm sure you know this) is the fact that you have natural oils in your hair and when you wash it, you strip these oils. This can cause your hair to become dry and brittle. It can cause breakage, split ends, etc. Hair becomes healthier and shinier in general when you minimize washing.

A few tips here:

1. The simplest is to just wear your hair up on days between washing. Hair is usually a lot easier to style in up-dos the day after washing because there will be less fly-aways and it stays in place better.

2. There are products on the market that dry cleanse your hair and really freshen it up when you've gone a day or so without washing it. A few examples are Jonathan Product Redo Freshen-Up Mist For Hair & Skin, Ojon Rub-Out Dry Cleanser, and there are tons more like these.

3. You can simply condition your hair in the shower every day that you don't use shampoo. Just be sure to rinse really well.

Well it is supposed to be every other day. You do that to keep the natural oils in your hair instead of washing them out to keep your hair from getting dry split ends or unhealthy. Both water and shampoo will take away the natural oils. It is better if you shower in the morning every other day if you do start to use this method because it will be a lot greasier and dirtier at then end of the day and that would be embarrassing. You should also try to not use so many/much hair products throughout or every day considering how bad it is for your hair. And no you shouldn't rinse not wash your hair in the days between, you should wear a cap in the shower so you don't get your hair wet and you can wash your body. I hope this helps, I have done this before and it really works and I still do it now, and it really does work. Good Luck!

If you wash your hair every day, you'll dry it out, which you don't want to do.

It probably leads to dandruff, since it is a condition of dryness.

Have you heard of the Salon Grafix’s Dry shampoo line?

This is wild - You can clean your hair without taking a shower. You just apply the product and then brush it out. There’s no white powder or oily residue and it leaves your hair clean and shiny.

There are so many times in a persons life when this would have been useful. For example, say you were being hospitalized for over a week, and for several days you weren’t able to get out of bed. It’s bad enough to be in pain after surgery, but then to feel dirty on top of things just makes it that much worse.

I can think of tons of uses for this. How about after you’ve been through a 24 hour labor and you want to look nice for those first pictures with your new baby? Also, all the beauty advice I’ve heard is that it’s healthier for your hair if you don’t shampoo every day. You’re supposed to shampoo every two days. I honestly can’t go that long. By the end of day one my hair looks dirty - so it would be nice to use this every other day.

Other ways to use it in a pinch:

You wake up late for work/a meeting/church. You could just hop in the shower and wash your body. Then use the Salon Grafix’s to skip the whole hair drying thing. (My hair is thick and drying my hair completely can take 30 minutes on a cold day.)

What about road trips? To save money on family vacations sometimes we drive rather than fly. By the time we arrive at our destination (where sometimes family is waiting to see us), we’re not looking so good.

I think this is something I’d like to keep handy for surprise situations like these. How about you?

You don't usually need as much product in your hair if you don't wash it as often. and if you get into the habit of washing it every other day, then it probably won't produce as much oil as it used to when you were cleaning it every day. Just try to put up with it for a while, because I don't think it's healthy for your hair if you wash it every day.

I shower every day but I only wash my hair every few days. I still use a little bit of product in it when it's wet. I think it depends on your hair type for what you should do with it regarding products.

and yes I think you should just wash it every other day and rinse but not wash on the others.

wow, I have long hair and I only wash it about twice a week, but I never use styling products.

I don't think rinsing your hair everyday would be good for it either though, unless you let it air dry, because blow drying is part of what damages hair...
