Question

What do you think of black people's natural hair?
No weave, no perm, no hot straighteners. Honestly, what do you all think?

Okayy well I'm a black girl myself, with long curly 3b texture hair and I think every hair type can be beautiful when taken care of. I love how diverse black people's hair texture is and how we can style it! Sadly a lot of black girls (including my mom and friends) damage their beautiful hair with heat, chemicals or straight up cover it with weaves and wigs! I can totally understand though- our hair can be SOO hard to manage, but some do these things because they were told all their life and believe they can't be pretty if they have "nappy", short or frizzy hair.



I have noticed that black beauty is becoming more appreciated now; blackout day, rihannas viral pics, baddies pages/ig models etc on twitter, instagram and tumblr; and our "typical" features are becoming more trendy (big butts, full lips, darker skin)



I honestly think big curly hair will be "in" very soon, arab/hispanic/mixed/black girls with curly hair are ALL OVER tumblr and more black women are joining team natural, I'm calling this out now lol.. relaxer sales have declined 26% over the past 5 years!

SIDENOTE: CAN I JUST SAY WOWWW! The majority of the answers are surprisingly POSITIVE.. this is the first time I've seen people speaking so positively about black people on the internet.. usually I see people saying we're subhumans or apes -_-.. this is a nice change!!

I'm Afro-Hispanic and my hair is pretty much Black. I get it straightened because it's easier to manage and I feel like there's so much more you can do to style it when it's straightened. My natural hair, when it's all frizzy and puffy, is so hard to manage. I can't run a comb through it without the comb getting stuck. I can't get to the scalp when I wash it. And I always have to put it in a ponytail because it pretty much looks like a lion's mane (and I am a lion...a leo...but I want my mane to be tame). Natural Black hair is gorgeous when it's properly taken care of. But I just don't have the time or patience for that. Besides, I had cute little afro's as a kid. I also wore braids as a kid. But now that I'm older I want something more sophisticated. Not that afro's and braids aren't sophisticated. Just that it's not my style anymore.



As for the other side of it, I never grew up feeling like other races had better hair. I grew up with the notion that straightening Black hair and wearing weaves and wigs was just a part of Black culture. I honestly don't know where people get this idea that Black people want White, Asian, Hispanic, etc. hair. That might be true to some extent but that's not the idea that I had instilled in me as a kid.



One last thing, I wanna point out that other races wear weaves and wigs too (in Hollywood, they call it 'extensions'). They also get perms as well. Black people just have more fun with it.

Its mainly just black women that straighten their hair. I have a black friend from Haiti who is here in the US and is making friends with many African-American persons. He told "Whew, don't ever say anything about Black women's hair." As for your question. I think black women wearing their hair natural can be very beautiful. I personally like long straight hair, but that is a personal preference. If I were to date or marry a black woman, I would prefer she wear her hair natural. But that is not an issue because I am married to a white woman. I guess that answered your question.

This question is not for me but I find kinky black hair can be so hard it hurts the scalp to comb it daily. That does not mean it is not beautiful. If one is no good at hairstyling then the kinky will be unmanageable and can appear very unkept, even after just styling. The alternative is a hair salon, expensive. Perming is a drug that can be very harmful with slow onset. However, it adds some flexibility to how black people can look in various ways.

What kind of question is this first off? Everyone is not the same. Even other races with "good hair" don't even like their hair. And all black people hair is not frizzy and big and nappy and all that other stuff. I'm purely black and my hair is straight and goes to the middle of my back. It's all about taking care of your hair and it'll look the way you want it

I know that black hair, because of its texture, can be really hard to maintain and if not maintained....it can look a mess. If it's maintained properly it can look amazing! A good old Afro is always a hit! On a male or a female! A lot of black women wear weaves and wigs because their own hair is such a pain to keep looking after but if they did, it'd look good also!

Don't stereotype. There are a variety of different types of hair just within the black people. From 4c hair, where the hair is very tightly coiled, the 'typical 'black' hair. To the loose curls of 2c hair. East africans tend to have looser curls and West africans tend to have tighter curls. There are of course exceptions. As for how it looks, the right people can make everything look good. I've seen people rock afros, dread-locks, micro-braids, everything and it looks amazing.

Now the problem is that, people copy what is happening in Hollywood and their mind is twisted that if you look like Rihanna or whoever, then you are looking beautiful.

I like it just fine. I've always admired the power afro, personally. I don't think it looks wild, personally, I think it looks very regal and showy!



I do get nit-picky when it comes to dread-locks. I don't hate dread-locks, but I hate dread-locks that are very poorly done and not taken care of. I also like braids and corn-rows, too.



I have fairly curly, frizzy hair myself as a white person, but because it doesn't have the kinky texture, it requires a lot more maintenance to make it look good.



I say keep your hair natural. You have natural volume and hold that people with pin-straight hair day-dream about having. Also, the tighter the curl pattern in hair texture, the less oily and greasy the hair gets. A person with straight hair has an oily mess after just one day.

Personally, I think it s beautiful. African American women are gorgeous and so are the men. I think it looks absolutely perfect unless they chop it down really short and walk around with basically a patch of fuzz on their head. However, sometimes that can really fit a person as well. I d go nuts if my hair was as thick as most black s natural hair (I m white by the way), but they seem to pull it off perfectly.

It can look nice, like I love the braids the African American women do and the dreadlocks look fantastic on men. Or natural hair that are those spiral curls are amazing, I love those.

The straight, natural hair they have seem like it would be hard to manage but black women are the only race that I think looks great with a short haircut.

Overall, I mostly like African American hair because it's perfect for dreadlocking and I'm obsessed with dreadlocks.

I'm white. I have kinky hair that drives me nuts sometimes. My goddaughter who is blonde & green-eyes has an afro. Honestly, I love the afro, but then I grew up during the time when big fros were popular. I especially love how it can be sculpted into so many stunning styles if you get a good haircutter. And it makes a statement that says so much that is to be admired. I understand why girls like to try weaves, wigs, etc. Sometimes I do it too. I just wish they'd enjoy what they have because it's great. Then again, the grass is always greener, right? :)

In my opinion, on a girl i really like the long super curly hair, when its so curly if you cut it to about mid neck length it would probably be an afro ... its quite a specific thing for me but im not saying i dont like other hair too. It can look really good when its been straightened too especially if its put in a french braid or something. On guys I think it depends a lot on their face - some can pull off really short hair and one of my friends had an afro thats pretty big but its really soft and looks amazing on him.

Personally, I think everyone should wear their hair however they choose. I would not waste a lot of money on wigs, weaves, chemical processes, or whatever, but that's just me. Also, I could not sit still in a stylist chair for hours on end, getting processes done. Again, that's just me.

I have natural light blonde hair, and it gets greasy everyday..I must wash it. I cannot imagine not washing my hair. If I were black, I'd probably keep it natural, wash it everyday, pull it back into a ponytail or bun and wear cute hair pieces..
